Bhai Tika, a wonderful sibling tradition

It’s all about the duty of a brother to protect his sister and a sister’s blessings for her brother.

The sister gives prayers to her brother for a long and happy life by applying a vertical tika of seven colours onto her brother’s forehead. She also treats him with his favourite food and gifts. In return, elder brothers bless their sisters with gifts or cash.

Bhai Tika is a lunar-based festival celebrated by Hindus as part of the multi-day Tihar Festival, held in October or November.

Its origins? According to Hindu religion, after slaying the evil demon Narakasura, Lord Krishna visited his sister Subhadra, who gave him a warm welcome with sweets and flowers and applied a tika on his forehead.
